In this week's episode, I share 3 things that will help your middle schooler attract healthy relationships.
Because I know this is soooo needed.
I mean, let's face it, do you ever look back on your middle school years with complete love and adoration for your social world - Not likely! In fact, one of the biggest sources of pain as a parent is knowing that your kid is most likely going to experience challenges in the form of bullying, being left out, being made fun of, or maybe always being in the midst of drama. The social world of middler schoolers is complex and can be riddled with insecurity and dysfunction.
So, if your kid has experienced these things, or you're worried they will, and you want to help them attract healthy friendships - this episode is for you.
Take a look at today's talking points
Things to keep in mind:
- Your middle schooler is forming their own identity
- They are biologically hard-wired for connection and deeply want to belong
- They are also hard-wired to take risks
Knowing these things as the foundation will help you as I dive into 3 simple things you can control that will help them attract healthy friendships.
- Create a safe space for them to be whoever they are in your home
- Help them develop an inner voice they trust and role-play high stakes situations
- Get them out of their "bubble"
These three things will help them become discerning about who they want in their life, and who they don't. It will help them have perspective on when they feel like a friend helps their light burn brighter, or a friend who dims their light and makes them feel less-than.
And, remember: this social time isn't supposed to be perfect - it is designed to be somewhat challenging. Cliques, heirarchies, mean girls, bullies jockeying for power - it all happens. But start here to help them understand and know the value of true belonging, healthy risk-taking, and creating a life of connection beyond the walls of their middle school.
