Study Strategies Every Middle Schooler Must Know
Your go-to guide to make learning
'stick' to their unique brain using simple
research-backed strategies that actually work!
Everyone's brain is wired a different way, and that's ok
First, the doors are open to my virtual private parent and student coaching practice. If parenting a middle schooler makes you anxious or especially stressed, maybe your middle schooler is struggling with doing what they need to do (this is executive function) or they are suddenly on the outs with friends, providing customized support for both of you is my specialty. Again, me taking 1:1 clients has only been something I've offered in person where I live, and expanding this to wherever you are online has been a dream of mine. If you haven't listened to my last episode "Your family plan to finish 2022 strong", listen to that one first, as this is Part 2 of this series. It's Episode 52. In the last episode, I cover:
-
The essential pre-work to your middle schooler's success
-
Why being realistic is important to goal setting to finish this term strong
-
How to examine what tests and projects lie ahead through a strategic lens
-
And, the why and how to get your whole family on board
Now, parents, this is an episode you might want to listen to with your middle schooler, so they have control and agency over determining what strategies resonate with them, and so you don't have to be the messenger. They can listen and learn right along with you.
As an Education Specialist, I believe it's essential for all of us to understand the universal aspects of our brains, but also that each individual brain is "wired" differently. Meaning, everyone learns differently and this is a beautiful thing.
So, in this week's episode, I'm sharing some of my tried and true favorite tips. They are backed in executive function and neuroscience research, specifically how to make things truly sticky to different kinds of brains when they are already holding and processing so much.
In this week's episode we talk about:
- How to make studying active instead of passive
- The importance of format and how to make it work for you
- Best use of visuals
- How to simplify and create patterns
- The benefit of teaching someone else
People, places, and things mentioned in the episode:
- Voice memo recording
- Active study strategies
